Itching: Not Just an Allergy — When It May Signal Life-Threatening Diseases

top-news

Itching (pruritus) is a common condition usually caused by skin allergies, eczema, scabies, or fungal infections. However, it may also indicate severe internal diseases. Medical News Today reports that itching can be an early warning sign of life-threatening conditions such as chronic liver and kidney diseases, autoimmune disorders, thyroid dysfunction, type 2 diabetes, shingles, and even certain cancers.
Liver disease-related itching often begins on the palms, while kidney disease can cause generalized itching due to toxin buildup. Autoimmune disorders like lupus, psoriasis, or Sjögren’s syndrome may cause skin rashes and persistent itching. Uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid imbalance can also trigger similar symptoms.
In rare cases, constant itching may signal underlying cancers like liver, gallbladder, or skin cancer. Doctors advise that persistent or unexplained itching should never be ignored and requires timely medical diagnosis.
